A styled session at The Melissa Barn

One of the first recommendations I received from fellow photographers when I asked for tips on getting into weddings was to attend styled sessions. What is that? Glad you asked!

Styled sessions can be for any kind of “event” but in my area they’re typically for weddings. The host will have models and vendors set up as a wedding, and photographers can come to build their portfolio and network with those vendors.

Styled sessions vary in price, size, and number of vendors with the more frequent ones I’ve been interested in ranging from $100-500. Some hosts will have time slots while others allow you to roam through the different “stations” as you please during the timeframe allowed. There are even some that do retreats that are a few days long with multiple venues involved!

This session was hosted by The Party Bs at The Melissa Barn at HD Ranch. Check out the rest of the blog to learn more about the vendors that were there!

1. Choosing a makeup artist for any photo shoot, and especially for a wedding can be stressful. But not this day! Our models had makeup done at the venue by Elizabeth Claire that was absolutely gorgeous. Their skin tones were matched perfectly and they were left absolutely radiant!

2. All the bridal models had their hair done onsite by Aleeha Artistry. The products and styles that were chosen for each model respected the natural texture and style of their hair, and the results are absolutely stunning!

3. It wouldn’t be a wedding session without dresses! The dresses were provided by both Lasting Bridal Couture and The Melissa Barn… and WOW! The were all stunning! The models had multiple options to choose from that fit their own personal style and made them as confident as they are beautiful.

4. As mentioned in the beginning, our venue for the day was The Melissa Barn at HD Ranch. I highly recommend them for a wedding or event! It’s quiet and secluded, but only minutes from McKinney so commuting is a breeze. The indoor and outdoor spaces are both beautiful and would be a gorgeous backdrop for your ceremony. They’ve even got a vintage blue truck that is a perfect photo op!

If you’re looking to get into weddings, styled sessions are a great place to start. You get time to practice posing for formal portraits, changing light situations, and different styles without the pressure of it being someone’s actual wedding day. It’s a great time to build your portfolio and to connect with vendors to build relationships.
